OUR PROGRAMS

Our facet programming follows the Healthy to the C.O.R.E. (Creating Relevant Opportunities for Real Enlightenment) theme, an umbrella program led by our Health and Human Service Facet. Enlightenment is education and/or awareness that brings about change. Healthy to the C.O.R.E. programming is designed to deliver practical, relevant information, access and opportunities to engage, empower, and uplift the community we serve to improve health outcomes which will also improve the lives of participants. These programs were implemented through various strategies such as analyzing public information and education, economic development, and public policy campaigns. With Health and Human Services (HHS) as the lead facet, the Renaissance Chapter of The Links will partner with the American Heart Association (and other community partners as needed) to Create Opportunities for Relevant Enlightenment to improve health, well-being and equity in Wayne County.  We continue to deliver facet programming, while incorporating relevant lifestyle behaviors, education, and resources to create and maintain a healthy lifestyle and improve quality of life. Using the American Heart Association’s Life’s Simple 7 (manage blood pressure, control cholesterol, get active, lower blood sugar, lose weight, stop smoking, eat better) and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s approach to Build a Culture of Health as a framework, each facet will collaborate with the HHS facet chair to deliver on our mission/vision at each encounter with stakeholders, while meeting the National objectives for The Links, Inc. Through our fundraising efforts, a budget has been allotted to carry out programming through our five facets:

  • Arts

  • Health and Human Services

  • International Trends

  • National Trends

  • Services to Youth

Art Facet

The Renaissance (MI) Chapter of the Links, Incorporated, promotes arts education among young people of color to pique their interest, increase their knowledge and encourage their participation in the classical arts. We develop education and community partnerships to optimize program impact, leverage chapter resources and recognize, reward and develop avenues to support excellence in artistic education.

Health and Human Services

The Renaissance (MI) Chapter of the Links, Incorporated is committed to addressing health-related issues that adversely affect our communities. Statistics show that heart disease is the number one killer of women and childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions. We are taking a stand to eradicate these illnesses in the African American community through the following programs:

Services to Youth

Recognizing the need to mentor and empower our young ladies, Renaissance Chapter members took action to develop Girl Stars! Girl Stars! is designed to empower girls and provide career and professional development and mentoring relationships with chapter members. This exemplary program, which operates in partnership with Old Redford Academy in Detroit, equips students with information, tools and vision to become successful and helps them take the necessary steps to become well-rounded women with an innate desire and ability to achieve their dreams.

National Trends

The Renaissance Chapter (MI) of the Links, Incorporated has developed a collaborative partnership with Pro-Literacy Detroit and Rotary District 6400 to recruit volunteers to teach adults to read in the Greater Detroit area. Why? According to the National Institute of Literacy, an alarming 47% of Detroiters are functionally illiterate. The inability to read tends to be inter-generational and perpetuates poverty, welfare dependence and unemployment

International Trends

L’École La Dignité was adopted as the International Trends and Services program in 2004.  L’École La Dignité  (School of Dignity) is located in Pétavy, a small fishing village on the South East coast of Haiti, a part of Haiti where education and funds for schooling is one of the greatest obstacles to strengthening the lives of young people.  After eight years, the Renaissance Chapter continues to play a vital role in building education capacity programs in Haiti through its affiliation with L’École la Dignité. Through our fundraising efforts, the chapter provides lunch, books and supplies to the school. In addition, we are working to support the development of a new vocational career program for students who complete the first level school (elementary).  In 2011, a $10,000 grant to support this initiative was awarded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. While L’École la Dignité is a special place in the hearts of Haitian students, it also has a special place in the hearts and minds of the Renaissance Chapter of Links, Incorporated.

To touch a life is significant, But to change a life, is our ultimate goal.
